Legend says that near the Canary Islands there is a roaming island that appears and disappears. For centuries, many explorers have tried to find it and conquer it. And perhaps the methods have changed, but the eagerness to dominate the territory, of cataloging everything that exists, still drives humanity. Building bridges between experimental cinema and scientific documentary, between the ghostly texture of film stock and the robotic sharpness of digital, Bloom dialogs with the myth of Saint Brendan’s Island, mirroring it with the exploration of the ocean’s depths. The film travels from the unique topography of a surface that seems otherworldly to that unknown life hiding under the sea. A gesture prevails—plunging deep into the darkness. Even if it seems impossible, the world is still full of mysteries. And sometimes cinema is there to remind us.
